Dr. Ioannis Theotokas is Associate Professor at the Department of Shipping, Trade and Transport of the University of the Aegean and Director of the Laboratory for Research in Shipping and Ports. He has a background of economics and has specialized in Shipping Management. He received his PhD from the University of Piraeus (1997). His research interests include issues related to Management, Human Resource Management and Strategic Management applied to shipping business. He has participated as scientific coordinator or as principal researcher in research projects related to employment and entrepreneurship in shipping, maritime training and e-learning and in consultancy studies funded/commissioned by European Commission, Niarchos Foundation, Greek Ministry of Economic Development, Ceres Hellenic Shipping Enterprises S.A., Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation and other organisations.

He is the author of the book Organisation and Management of Shipping Companies (Alexandria, 2011) and co-author of the books Leadership in world shipping. Greek family firms in international business (with G.Harlaftis, Palgrave, 2009), Greek Shipping: current trends and future prospects (with G.Harlaftis and H.Thanopoulou, Academy of Athens, 2009), Greek Shipping, Employment and Competitiveness. Human Resources Management Strategies (with M.Lekakou, A.Pallis, T.Syriopoulos and I.Tsamourgelis, Gutenberg, 2008) and Greek Shipowners and shipping firms. Organization, Management and Strategies (with G.Harlaftis, Alexandria, 2007).

He has authored 26 papers published in academic journals (which include Maritime Policy and Management, Marine Policy, Business History, International Journal of Human Resource Management and Corporate Governance) and books and has presented over thirty peer reviewed papers at international scientific conferences.

He is member of International Association of Maritime Economics and of European Academy of Management. He is the Secretary of the Association of Greek Maritime Economists.
